The annual holiday sickness

The boys have both been sick for days. We just had an active and busy week--with events celebrating the season and activities galore. I can only wonder if the onslaught of extra activities (combined with slightly stressed parents still trying to finish the shopping) creates the right environment in the petri dish we call public school for various diseases to fester and spread.

As a result, this weekend we've slowed waaaaay down, to allow them time to rest and recover before the "main event" this week. I've reluctantly canceled a few social outings, and we've spent a lot of time at home together. It's not a bad idea, in fact, right before the holidays, to spend some time reconnecting. It's interesting to see the difference between the boys---Alex accepts the sickness and settles in with books or movies or games and waits for it to pass. Jameson, the other hand, takes the approach to fight---whether it is his brother, our suggestions (or demands) to stop jumping off the furniture, or the disease itself--he becomes this anxious, tantrum filled boy. (even more than the usual tantrums, that is) We, in turn, have started to anxiously awake the return of healthy, cheerful boys.

Jameson has had his wonderful moments this week, though. One of them was this morning when his coughing woke him up too early, and I held him until he fell back asleep. Listening to his breathing and feeling his body relax into mine was a wonderful way to start my day (albeit not the early morning yoga I had planned).

Also this week he had his debut appearance in the annual Trinity Lutheran Preschool Christmas Pageant. I'll let the pictures tell the story...

First and foremost, we gathered his local Ann Arbor fan club:

And then our Jameson tentatively came on the stage, looking adorably cute in a little lamb costume... yet also a bit nervous.

He settled in pretty quickly, though, and gave his whole heart in the performance. What expressions!

He even relaxed enough to take care of some personal hygiene. (We were so proud.)

And then, a few moments later, they were finished.

It was just a few short songs up on a little stage, but seeing him overcome his fear and sing the songs with such spirit... well, it definitely made my week.
