Baking with Boys

It's February, we live in Michigan, and there are two active boys in the house.

It nearly goes without saying that on this bitter cold days, it is easy to get cabin fever. There are only so many playdates you can arrange, or so many outings you can take to break up the weekend without resorting to too much TV.

There comes a time when baking is required. And with these boys, "baking" actually means "making a huge mess in the kitchen."

But I'm okay with that. It occupied the three of us for quite a long time, and at the end we had some corn muffins and two loaves of bread rising.

Even better than the baked goods, though, were the other products of our activities. Those intangible products, like the botherly cooperation, the tasting and learning about flavors, the laughing, and the delight in the messiness of it all.

Yep, it was totally worth that huge pile of dishes.
